Floodplain Restoration along the Dog River

Friends of the Winooski River used Ecological Restoration Program grants from the State of Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation to hire Milone & MacBroom, Inc (MMI) to conduct hydraulic modeling of the Dog River. MMI studied the river from the footbridge at the Norwich rugby field to the Cross Brothers dam. They modeled dozens of restoration options and combinations of options to find the most effective approach to reducing flood risk to the Water Street neighborhood.

The current concept involves removing the berm along the river between the two remaining homes on the east side of Water Street, and lowering the level of the land to allow the river to spread out and slow down. This will lower the level of floodwater in the neighborhood on the west side of the street.
